Sandstone is formed over millions of years and is a sedimentary stone caused by layers of sand and minerals being deposited on each other by water currents. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in earth's crust. When the water courses ceased to flow or changed direction these layers became covered with other materials which compacted the layers of sand into a hard stone. This is also the reason for the different colours that can be found in Sandstone. The hardness of the Sandstone is also a good indication of the quality and durability of the product and if it can be used in domestic or commercial applications.
Sandstone tiles are available in two finishes:
The advantage of these tiles is that quite narrow joints can be achieved thus these sizes are ideal for more contemporary external projects. The large format size of 600x600mm allows scope for many innovative and dramatic applications. You can mix the same materials with different surface textures such as an area of Flamed with inlays of Honed.
When choosing a Sandstone Tile it is important to get an idea for how far the colour ranges. Each type of colouring has positive aspects, but it is important to know the nature of the stone, before you choose it for installation. Different colors affect people's psyches in various ways, and the colour of the tiles you choose will have a major impact on the atmosphere of your Living Space. Before you decide on a colour, think about what you want the ambiance of the area to be. You probably don't want excited colors such as red's, oranges, and pinks in this space as they will tend elicit a violent, and agitated feeling. More subdued tones such as green's and blues will do the opposite, creating calmness and imbuing it with a gentle peace.
You can also consider combining colors to balance their effects. For instance a violently vibrant orange can be subdued by a deep and gentle blue, which will create a colour scheme which is exciting, but not irritating. In the same way black can be balanced out quite easily with white, creating a checkerboard look which is refreshing and cool, while still maintaining an element of the wild.
Sandstone Tiles can be purchased with other tiles in two or three colors in order to create patterns. The most basic of these is the checkerboard mentioned above although there are an infinite number of ways to organize your tiles to create some truly stunning effects. You can create patterns of stars or diamonds, or border one colour with another, or create rows and columns. However the more elaborate your design, the more you are going to spend in materials, and the harder it will be to implement. If the pattern is being installed for you make certain that you know exactly what it is going to look like, and try to lay it out for yourself on a dry surface to be certain that it is the look you want.
Sandstone Tiles will stain but this can be prevented by using sealers when installing and attending to spills with the correct cleaning fluids as quickly as possible. Technical advice should be sought at the time of purchase or installation. Sandstone Tiles will stand up to normal wear and tear and will look good after years of service if preventive measures are employed during installation. Please contact us for technical advice on which sealer would suit your particular application. We are also able to advice you on installation tips and even advice a reputable contractor/tiller installing your product depending on your requirements.
