Sandstone is formed over millions of years and is a sedimentary stone caused by layers of sand and minerals being deposited on each other by water currents. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar because these are the most common minerals in earth's crust. When the water courses ceased to flow or changed direction these layers became covered with other materials which compacted the layers of sand into a hard stone. This is also the reason for the different colours that can be found in Sandstone. Sandstone tiles are available in two finishes:

1. Honed - A smooth machined surface.
2. Flamed - A textured and varied surface created by "flaming" the top surface. This finish is ideal for exterior patio and/or swimming pool areas, because of its texture it will prevent slipperiness.

The advantage of these tiles is that quite narrow joints can be achieved thus these sizes are ideal for more contemporary external projects. Step 1

Keep your Sandstone Tiles free of dust and dirt during installation by using a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. Do not use any type of hard plastic or metal vacuum attachment as they can easily scratch your tiles. Sealing should take place immediately after tilling when they are still brand new. Unsealed Sandstone Tiles is very susceptible to stains and discoloration.

Step 2

Sealants should be applied every 2 or 3 years to keep Sandstone Tiles protected. Sealants also prevent the absorption of moisture into the tile which can also cause staining from chemicals in the air.
